One of the staples of my running wardrobe is a good pair (or two!) of long compression tights – particularly during a Melbourne winter.

I still see people running in shorts and singlets at the height of winter, but not me. No way. I’m the one in compression tights, merino, an ear-warming headband and gloves. And sometimes my hands still get so cold that I can’t grip the keys to open my front door when I get home from my evening runs.

For the cold frogs like me who understand the need to rug up in winter, here are my top picks for eco-friendly compression tights that won’t break the bank:

Dharma Bums – DBX Performance Compression Legging – RRP $120 AUD – these are stylish, comfortable and I love the mesh side panels. I have worn mine a number of times – they are high compression and wash well. Made in Australia and with Ethical Clothing Australia accreditation, Dharma Bums are a great choice from an ethics point of view. The fabric is a polyester and lycra blend – a good option for performance. Check out the website link below:

DBX Performance Compression Legging – Full Length

Yogiic – Sacral Compression Tight – RRP $89.95 AUD – whilst Yogiic target the yoga market, these are a great addition to your running wardrobe and are a little more affordable than the average compression tights. They are a flattering, high-waisted fit and feel as comfortable and supportive as any of my other running tights. Made from a recycled polyamide blend, these are the ultimate in eco-friendly activewear.

d+k – Ziggy Tight – RRP $109.95 AUD – I love the colour blocked panel styling of these tights, they are one of my favourites. Not only do they look great, they are super comfortable and definitely tick the performance box. d+k are a relatively new Australian label – the products are made in Australia and with Ethical Clothing Australia accreditation. Made from sustainable lycra that is imported from Italy, these are a great earth-conscious option. Website link below.

First Base – Game On Compression Legging – RRP $129 AUD – it’s hard not to fall head over heels for these leggings. They look and feel amazing – it’s as simple as that. Did I also mention that they are one of the most flattering pair of leggings I’ve ever worn? Ethically produced in China, the leggings are made from 80% recycled nylons – a great eco-friendly option, particularly if you’re looking for something different from the typical black. First Base Clothing factories are independently audited to ensure they are WRAP compliant (that’s Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production). I give these leggings a big thumbs up. I hope this gives you the motivation and inspiration to look for more ethical options when you hit the shops this winter. As we runners know, there’s nothing worse than being cold when you’re out on the trails.

If you know of any other fabulous brands out there producing ethical and sustainable compression tights, I’d love to hear from you in the comments section below.

Enjoy your next run and let’s tread lightly!
